== Description of this Roles Online Group ==

The purpose of the group is to collaboratively write and maintain a document on the roles involved in creating, leading and participating in online groups. The paper has co-authors, Walter Logeman and Dan Randow dan@groupsense.co.nz, who together are responsible for what is included in ''Roles Online". We invite others to join this group and contribute.

The document we are writing will cover how people can be fully and effectively present in various types of online groups. The aim is to create a practical document with some reference to theoretical and philosophical issues.

Upon joining you will receive a welcome message with more details about the collaboration process we are using to author the document.

The Roles Online Document and this Roles online Group are a joint GroupSense and Psybernet Project.  The list's Administrator and Host is Walter Logeman walter@psybernet.co.nz

== Collaboration Plan for "Roles Online"==

Authoring:

The paper has co-authors, Walter Logeman and Dan Randow, who together are responsible for what is included in ''Roles Online". The paper was jointly conceived and the basics of it are already in our heads, and has been co-authored there. Each of us have contributed substantially to the current version 0.06. We invite group members to participate with comments, ideas, offer corrections, suggest references and links and to write text for the document. All contributions will be considered, but not necessarily included in the document.  Contributors will be acknowledged.

Process:

The collaboration process itself is something we take interest in, and some discussion in the Roles List about the collaboration process is welcome.  There is another mailing list hosted by Walter, collab_project where the process and all matters related to online collaboration can be discussed more fully.

[Email collab_project-subscribe@egroups.com to subscribe.]

Editor:

Walter will regularly put up new versions on the web, with material that has been agreed upon by the authors.

Time frame:

No deadline for completion but September 1999 or earlier would be good, for a public version (1.00) to appear on the web. Once this has happened this mailing list will continue to maintain the document collaboratively and work on new versions.

Version History:

Each change will add 0.1 (or more for major upgrades) to the numbering. First public draft will be Version 1.00 The version and date will appear in the body as well.

== Guidelines for Roles Online Group members ==

* Netiquette:

Posts are required to be civil and purposeful. Personal attacks or threats are not welcome.

If you are not familiar with the basics of etiquette on the Internet please check out or ask in Roles Online Group.

* Participation:

Active participation will make this a vital and valuable group, and we invite you to join in.  Membership without posting is fine, however occasional brief comments are appreciated.

* Ownership of your words:

In Roles Online Group your words remain your property. Please do not use other people's posts outside the list without their permission. If the writer can not be contacted discuss permission with the Host. Please notify the Host if material is to be used off-list. Private emails are not to be quoted in Roles Online Group without permission from the writer.

* Topics and Threading:

Feel free to start a new topic. This is done by using a new Subject: line in your posts. It is best if they relate to the purpose of the list, however it is very broad. If you are joining an existing discussion please use the *exact* same Subject: line so that the discussion can be read as a thread.

* Quoting:

Please keep quoting from earlier emails (using the > sign) to a minimum. This is very important for those who search, print or store the discussions. Quote enough to put your response in context. Please do not use more than two generations of quoting (>>).

* Formats:

The preferred format for writing and reading the text in the posts is a fixed pitch font such as Courier New, 10pt and no more than 70 characters per line please do not use HTML. Please do not send attachments to the list.

~~~
This welcome file and the separate documents that make it up can be reviewed from time to time.  Discussion about that can take place in the Roles list.
