Hello Anyone there??

I'm wondering if I missed anything, because I'm not sure if any messages
are getting through, since I haven't had any since 6/16/01.

Let me know if anyone on Psyber-L gets this.

    Thanks Janell Adair

Hi Janell and Walter,

It really is puzzling what has happened to this list. I can only
speculate for myself.
During much of this quiet period I've been active and enjoying other
lists [Jung and haiku]. And thinking/wondering about this one and its
members. I'll try to verbalize what seems most probably about the 'blocks'
in effect for myself pertaining to this list.
I think the topic of Psyche in Cyberspace is fascinating. Yet when
discussion occurs here on this subject (from my own viewpoint only) I find
them to center around the technological aspects in which I am fairly
disinterested (which is to say they are too far down on my list of interest
priorities for me to make time for them) and/or that they are expressed in a
specialized disciplinary language which I don't really understand (nor have
the motivation to learn). And in fact doesn't even seem consistent with the
subject to me.
What I'm saying above is that the feeling I get here is similar to that
when I run across a technical article to which someone has given an
imaginative, metaphorical title. While the title draws me in, the substance
does not sustain my interest, for I quickly realize that it is not what I
had supposed it to be from the title.
I don't mean this as an 'objective' criticism, nor really any other
(though I know I have appeared to personalize it in the past when I guess
what I really wanted was to 'change' this list into one I personally could
enjoy). You all have a right to make this whatever sort of list you wish,
of course. Though actually is seems to have become primarily an unused
list. And I have a personal interest and regard for each of you (at least
those of you I've had a chance to get to know through past posts).
If I had to specify an example of the conflict as I see it appear here,
I'd refer to the past discussions where several of us wanted to define this
'place' as a 'community' (I think here particularly of Robert Longpre and
myself though I'd guess there may have been others- possibly Judith and
Aldon). As I remember it, it was you, Walter, who resisted this defination.
You are the owner and 'host' and have every right to this position. Yet
what this seems basically to translate into in the present, is that we don't
seem to have enough in common goal-wise to function as a list.
Do I long for the 'good old days'? Yes, sort of. Yet an attempt to
bring them back seems regressionary. Also I really don't see sufficient
support for such a move to succeed.
I hope you can understand what I am trying to say here.

With warmest regards to you each as individuals,

    Nancy

Dear Walter,
As you can probably tell, I posted another response before I saw yours
below.
I believe I recognize yours as a repeat. The first time I saw it I
thought 'I wonder exactly what he Is experiencing and what dreams may
accompany it.' I didn't post these questions because at that point, the
list having become what it seems to be now, they felt invasive. Also
putting myself in your place (or at least trying) I would not have cared to
confide such personal information in the present 'distant' environment.
I'm still extremely curious however <g>
Also I don't think the number of people on the list make any difference.
In fact, when Stephan brought that hypothesis up, as I recall, he referred
to the number of consistently active posters. With this I tentatively
agree. So this was what I was really addressing in my first post.
Yes, I am finding the 'gods' active elsewhere in cyberspace, but for
some reason they don't seem to be gracing us here with their presence. This
subject heading also strikes me as something of a 'loss leader' for a
discussion of numbered 'stages'. I don't think I've ever seem the gods take
an interest in such an organized approach. Well, possibly Yahweh with the
ten commandments, but then he wasn't a very 'approachable' fellow (no
offense intended to the host). The rest were a pretty rowdy emotive bunch
(I refer you to most pre-one god myths and to the writer Thorne Smith, a
sort of psychic cousin of mine)

    Best, Nancy (Smith)

PS Sorry about leaving your message dangling uncut, but surely the archives
can't be bulging these days.

In the good old days I was in a much different position than I am now:
college. I used to write pages and pages of e-mails in dozens of
different discussion groups. These days I'm lucky if any email get to
be over two paragraphs. In a practical business sense that works fine,
but it's certainly not a way to help build an active online community.

That's at least a small fragment of what's happening here.

It's good to hear from you, Rob. Yes. I can understand your plight (if
that's the right word)
Actually my own experience while I was 'working', would have been not
precisely the time to write so much. Short burst should be as good as long
ones. But I find that I need to be in a certain 'mode of being' to
participate well 'here', and it isn't very compatible with a lot of
'extroverted, meet other people's standards' sort of existence. Now that
may be mostly just me. Stephan, for example, seems to manage just fine.

    Best to all, Nancy

Hello Janell and all,

>Hello Anyone there??

I have been here and not been here all the time. I have kept my membership
though I don't know what has prompted me to do so. It is like I am holding
an empty box that I am loathe to part with, so I clutch it all the more
fiercely to my chest.

Robert
