Hi,

There are now a few people subbed to the Psybernet weblog at:

<a href>http://psybernet.editthispage.com</a> thanks for doing
that, I have continues to flick things over there quite easily.
There are plenty of interesting links there and opportunity to
discuss them. For all that the whole idea is a bit of a mystery
still... so many weblogs, so many people adding stuff... who ever
reads it? Also for a decent discussion, Psyber-L would be better
- and that is not a happening thing!

Still i have a sense that it is a good addition to the Psybernet
website, and good things may come of it yet.

Have a look at the links on the weblog and see where this all
leads.

There are some discussions brewing i think, on the psyche,
technology and online learning....

PS,

I have sent this to Psyber-L and also as a Bulletin... It is
partly a test to see if the bulletins work.

Walter

Hi,

I have been putting a swag of stuff up on the log site:
http://psybernet.editthispage.com

Stuff on design, a link to Roberts new weblog, education,
everything related to "exploring the psyche in cyberspace" in
some way.

Have a look.

Walter, all,

I have just posted an article of interest to:

http://rgl.editthispage.com/stories/storyReader$5

We have often talked about the notion of community in cyberspace, often in
reference to the concept of community that characterises PSYBER-L. In the
article I speak about the possibility of using the Internet to support real
communities, especially small, isolated rural communities which are
different from their neighbours.

Hope that this is of interest. I have just returned from a visit to your
space:

http://psybernet.editthispage.com

and I find it bursting with energy. I have to admit that the amount is
daunting for me at this time because of an extremely busy life. It's a
great thing that these articles can be archived in order to enable dialogue
when each of us has more time for reading. I do think that this
"editthispage.com" service can be a valid extension of a group such as
PSYBER-L.

Robert

Robert,

Interesting Robert. Is this a project you have involvement with?
The "community" there is based around the actual technology and
so on. I sense an underlying philosphy that if the tools are
there then the community will be... which may be true in that
case! As we know though, to do email community all it takes is
any old PC online, plus burning the midnight oil!

Yes, so I wonder if the community can actually form in rl around
doing something as solitary as writing away from home? Is the rl
community -- a valuable thing -- be more focused around face to
face <anything>? I hope you keep us posted!

It is to me! Also to see your website etc... a fun thing to do!

I am not counselling this week, and that has made a difference,
but acually it is more that it is very easy to put up those short
links. I use "Manilla Express" have you found that? With a
couple of clicks the links are up. I dont even have to go to the
site!

There is also something about posting them there which means I do
not "push" them at people. Like my now old Links pages, I do
this mostly for myself, not to build anything, even community...
though of course a community of a few of us here has developed
and is evolviong.

Certainly as part of my online literacy, and perhaps identity.
As Miles said... this Psyber-L is the place to discuss stuff... I
can't see how ETPs can really foster that, though there is a
community of them there... I wrote about it...

All,

I have been pondering this for days:

Walter

~~~
A quote from: p36 of 'The Soul of a New Machine' by Tracy Kidder
1981
'I'd been living in fear of VAX for a year,' West said afterward,
while driving along 495 one evening. 'I wasn't really into G-Two.
VAX was in the public domain arid I wanted to see how bad the
damage was. I think I got a high when I looked at it and saw how
complex and expensive it was. It made me feel good about some of
the decisions we've made.'
    Looking into the VAX, West had imagined he saw a diagram of
DEC's corporate organization. He felt that VAX was too
complicated. He did not like, for instance, the system by which
various parts of the machine communicated with each other; for
his taste, there was too much protocol involved. He decided that
VAX embodied flaws in DEC's corporate organization. The machine
expressed that phenomenally successful company's cautious,
bureaucratic style. Was this true? West said it didn't matter, it
was a useful theory. Then he rephrased his opinions. 'With VAX,
DEC was trying to minimize the risk,' he said, as he swerved
around another car. Grinning, he went on: 'We're trying to
maximize the win, and make Eagle go as fast as a raped ape.'
All,
Another one:
A quote from: p126 of 'The Soul of a New Machine' by Tracy Kidder
1981
~~~

'It's funny,' Rasala said, 'I feel very comfortable talking in
nanoseconds. I sit at one of these analyzers and nanoseconds are
wide. I mean, you can see them go by. "Jesus," I say, "that
signal takes twelve nanoseconds to get from there to there."
Those are real big things to me when I'm building a computer. Yet
when I think about it, how much longer it takes to snap your
fingers, I've lost track of what a nanosecond really means.' He
looked at me. 'Time in a computer is an interesting concept.'

    Then he excused himself. Time in all varieties weighed upon
him, and out here it was time to go to work.

Now we might be going the other way, we unconsciously restructure
organisations to match the structure of the machine. Once we do
that with organisations our minds follow.

Freud had a steam engine approach to the mind for example.

All,

> 'Time in a computer is an interesting concept.'

I am working with an organisation to bring the training on line.
They are thinking of it as an add-on to replace phone
conferences.

I think, that they will need to restructure their organisation,
time and place management because they are in a new
environment...

asynchronous ...

fast in some ways ~ slow in others.

Distancing in new ways ~ intimate in new ways

~~~
I think as "online group design" as organisational design.  There
is the design of the software platform -- and the design of the
roles and responsibilities of the *people*.
Social system design.
All,
This "group" such as it is, is not in a material place.  It is in
"cyberspace".  However its posts are on machines around the
world.
Some people will get them in their Inbox filter them into the
Psyber-L folder they have made in their email program.
Other go NOMAIL and read and reply on the Web at:
This dual possibility mirrors the dual nature of the Internet.
Data stored out there and accessible from any machine.
Individuals connecting one to the other, storing the stuff on
their own machines.
Some questions I have about this:
Will one eventually dominate over the other?  Will we all have
"hotmail" type addresses, store our stuff on our websites, use
the servers, that are out there somewhere on the net.
Or will all our machines become servers, as is happening now with
napster (mp3 music exchange in real time from your machine to
mine via only an address server).  Imagine how that might be! we
simply shared all the files on our machine and they all had XML
meta tags.
More than likely it will remain as now, both.
~~~

The real question is how does this creep into who we are? Into
our psyche?

If it were all web then this group would feel as if it "met" out
there. If it were all on my own machine organised in My colours
and My folders (as it is for me) it would feel as if we met
closer to home.

Walter, all,

Walter, I have a question or two for you. On one hand, the tendrils of
self-expression grow into more tendrils and those tendrils begat even more.
So, whether it's here or SmartNetTalk or the e dream group or the Weblog or
any of the other places which take up psyche, and too which you are
committed to, there is an ongoing eruption of material, (if you will).

How do you deal with it? How do you give the quality of attention you'd
prefer to this rapidly expanding psybernet world?

***

This question has to do with our individual awareness resolving the
awareness of others. Obviously, this is in addition to doing the same thing
offline. When I feel spread too thin I have one of two responses: narrow
the field of focus; or, spread myself even more thinly. :-)

***

regards, Stephen

Stephen, all

   The questions that you ask Walter are excellent!!!! I've wondered the
same
thing myself.

         I find myself doing the same thing namely spreading myself too thinly
if I want to widen my focus as Walter seems to do. Ar times, (since I live in
the US) I think maybe the pace of life is less hectic in New Zealand then
where
I live, but then I say "no" that can't be it, but what is it?????

Stephen ,

Your question is welcome and to the point:

Many answers. I usually focus on one main area at a time. This
one mailing list, Psyber-L is never far away for me. It has gone
through a few lifetimes, but it feels like a deeply rooted home.
Over the years I have come to know that when I am really into
being who I am I am *exploring* and it is not the outer world as
in my youth (oh shit i sound like an old man!) but the "here and
now"... so online it is "Exploring the psyche in Cyberspace." I
never tire of it. I dream it. I have not been dreaming lately
(I just wrote elsewhere, but just recalled this moment, a dream
of an old man! -- as well as repetitive dreams about files and
folders and the contours of cyberspace.)

I have a hunger for depth, but that might include breadth... I
want to know what is going on with the Net! I have a sense of a
new phase, where everyone and everything is going online, and
things get very muddled. I want to see the whole picture.

Then, of course, I do *not at all* give the quality of attention
I'd prefer to this rapidly expanding psybernet world.

Is that obvious? It feels it to me... I would love to learn so
much more. I'd like to be *taught*... I'd like to learn more
collaboratively about the net. I could do with a 100 more hours
every day.

And another answer:... I am not really in that much of an
expanding space. The DreamEvent99-00 is coming to an end... this
group has been very quiet. I do not participate in SmartNetTalk,
and the Weblog is actually no big deal... I can add links there
as easy as adding a "bookmark", there is a bit of software called
"Manilla Express" it takes about two clicks, much easier than
keeping up my old "links" pages.

And another: I have just had 10 days off work, most of it on my
own in our holiday house.

And another: I am ging through a bit of a crisis with a
freindship breaking down. I think I do avoid or seek solace here
at such a time.

What a spiel!

Can you explain that a bit more?

I feel both stretched and focussed at the moment. I am deeply in
love with two things:

   Family.

   Work.

So that keeps it simple.

I still have the jury out after that long post if I am spread to
thin or not! :)

But the pace of life... is Ok here! I live in a city where I can
walk in 10 minutes to Everything! My friends, the city center,
the Hospital where I am doing the new computer consulting (though
I do not need to meet there much), my work, Kate's work, about 25
coffee shops, restaurants and all the movie theaters I can
handle, and that is a lot!

In Sydney where i grew up each one of those would take an hour
there and an other one back, if not a lot more.

Also the kids have left home. (except that Becks has just moved
back :)

And we have a lovely holiday house in the hills, 2 hours drive
away, where I have a seasons ski pass for $US40 per year!

I feel like I have a charmed life! Lucky!

Dear Walter,

You asked in reference to my story/post:
> > http://rgl.editthispage.com/stories/storyReader$5
>
> Interesting Robert. Is this a project you have involvement with?

Yes. I am the one who heads this project. I have done most of the work to
obtain the grants and I have the authority/responsibility to set up the
centre in the school in which I am principal. And, I will be the primary
person to supervise the centre and offer tutorials on Internet usage in the
community. Our community library is included within the school library. I
also do the selection of technology and co-sign the checks to pay for
necessary additions to the existing network. I am also beginning to build a
web-site which will give the community a web-mail address and access to
three community discussion lists. It's a slow process as my role as
prinicipal is extremely time intensive in this community.

When building an online community structure for and within a real community,
especially a divided community, it takes much more than building an
at-distance online community. Will it work? Time will tell. The village
community dynamics are a case study worthy of a large team of practicing
psychotherapists and psychologists. More about this later if need be.

Robert
